Monday, May 5Students completed European Explorations Analysis and interpretation chart including Causes and Effects. Tuesday, May 6River Bandits game due to rain-out last Tuesday. Wednesday, May 7Students completed their European Exploration Chart response sheet. Students worked on a map of the European Land Claims of the Americas. They will need to get a copy of the map from Miss B. I am not able to upload it here. Thursday, May 8Students completed their European Land Claims map. Students completed a preview set of questions before viewing segments from Elizabeth: The Golden Age movie. At this time, I am unable to provide a link to the movie. Students need to see me to make this up. Friday, May 9Students completed viewing the movie segments from Thursday and completed the accompanying questions.
Monday, April 28Students contributed to a chart of European Exploration and land claims of the Americas. Each class read about two explorers and added information to the chart about the causes, voyages, outcomes and effects of each explorer and their country. Activity was completed together in class. Look for patterns, similarities and differences in causes and effects of various European countries explorations and settlement in the Americas. Above: Waldseemuller map in color. Miss B is available after school most days. Please arrange a time if you need help. Students who take the bus may see Miss B during homeroom. Today students reviewed last Friday's video with discussion about the motivations for Europeans to explore and move to the Americas. Students participated in demonstration of overland trade from Asia to Europe and the increasing costs that were incurred to answer the question: Why were spices and other goods from Asia so expensive? See video of demo below if you were absent. READ Introduction in Age of Exploration chapter. STOP! Answer on response sheet either from class or download below. 1. Do you think you might have wanted to be an explorer? Why or Why not? Give two specific answers. If you think it would be cool you need to say why. If you think it would be dreadful, you need to say why. 4 points

READ Age of Exploration Section 2 Causes of European Exploration Answer Question 2 on response sheet (see Monday above for response sheet) List of Motives from the reading to help you answer Question 2 on the response sheet: 1. European rulers want to find new Trade routes to Asia for goods, Esp spices, from the East - Europeans could not grow these things in their climate. They want to find new routes so they can still get what they want and more cheaply 2. Curiosity and knowledge 3. Glory, fame 4.New lands riches and resources which lead to wealth and power 5. Spread of Christianity Answer Question 2 on response sheet (see Monday above for response sheet) Please note, the third question is listed as number 4 and there are only three answers needed, not four as it is numbered. List of the remaining three technologies from the reading to help you answer the third question. 1. Improved ships the caravel 2. Improved navigational tools compass and astrolabe 3. Thursday, April 17Students completed watching the above video segment from 1492, Conquest of Paradise. Students watched the first 13 minute video segment from the documentary, 500 Nations. Students: if you need to make up this assignment - you only need to watch the first 13 minutes of it. There is a short video guide assignment for you to complete. You can get a copy from me or download and print from the file below. The guide is for participation points - all the answers do not have to be perfect. Do your best as you watch the video. You can always replay it if necessary. It's a good segment and one that students really appreciate.
Monday, April 7LATE WORK Reminder to email when you are ready to have any of your Aztec, Inca notes or essay checked. I will not go look at your documents until you alert me to. DO NOT reshare the document - please just email to let me know if notes need to be corrected. Remember that when you make your Google doc for your essay, that you share it with psburger. The point? One source of information can be misleading or incomplete. The First Americans TCI Textbook Lesson READ Setting the Stage silently at first and then class reading and discussion. Examine European territorial land claims map in text.

Wednesday, April 9See assignment for Tuesday. Due end of class Wednesday. Thursday, April 10Geography of European countries involved in the early Age of Exploration. VIEW 1500's political map of European country boundaries in first TCI chapter in Setting the Stage. Google Earth practice activity in class - marking the following countries with a placemark pushpin: Portugal, Spain, France, Netherlands, England Students then LOCATE and LABEL the countries PLUS the Atlantic Ocean on a map of Europe and a World map. 12 points Notice that on the World map you will need to draw lines out from each country and write on the line. We have done this in class before. Maps available from Miss B or download below. Absent students MUST make up the map work, they do NOT have to make up the Google Earth activity.
Friday, April 11Students watched first 30 minutes of National Geographic video: America Before Columbus.
Prior to the video, students wrote answers to the following questions: (5 points) What motivated you to come to school today? What motivates you to participate in activities of any kind? What motivates you to eat? What motivates you to spend money? What does motivate mean? During or after the video, students should keep in mind and answer the following: (5 points) 1. List the reasons Europeans will be motivated to conquer and or/move to the Americas (from both Rulers and Commoners perspectives) 2. What is the purpose for watching this video? Students who were absent need to make up the questions on motivation and watch the video and answer the questions about the video. Students should put their answers on their own paper. For students who have internet that struggles with streaming or who do not have internet at home, need to let me know and I will get a copy for them to view.
