What's wrong with history?
Learn about Perception
NOTICE! The Official Time Traveler Edmodo badge is in for those who have completed their Time Traveler avatar, profile and TT machine/device drawing.
We worked today to further our understanding of history by asking:
1. What affects the accuracy of how history is recorded? (accuracy = correct in details)
2. How reliable is historical evidence? (reliable = trustworthy)
Our first consideration is to examine human perception which is a very basic human trait that can affect the accuracy of how the past is recorded into history.
PERCEPTION: the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses.
To illustrate the flaws and imperfections in human perception and therefore the imperfections in the human recording of past events, we watched the videos you see below. Students recorded some responses as we watched the videos and then drew conclusions accordingly. The response sheet cannot be posted here since many of the questions were "mystery questions" which were questions that I could not reveal until parts of the videos were seen. Students may watch the videos and see me for how to make-up the written work.

Learning about Perspective
Perspective: a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.
Today's lesson requires listening to a video called, "Seven Blind Mice." The video will be posted on Thursday, September 19 after the "answer" is revealed. For students who were absent this day and need to make up this activity, it would be best to WAIT to watch the video until you have further instructions and the response sheets from Miss B. The activity is called Sketch to Stretch and requires students to consider the perspectives of the blind mice as they each describe a different part of the "strange something" by their pond. Students must sketch each part as it is described and then attempt to identify and draw the whole "something."
Students must then rate their performance regarding several of the steps in the process including defending their conclusion to their peers. The lesson teaches perspective, and understanding how to construct a well considered whole from the incomplete parts and using evidence to defend it.

Constructing & deconstructing a definition of history.
Students will use Inspiration 9, a visual mapping tool available on the MacBooks, to construct an increasingly detailed definition of history. See sample of our preliminary definition in the image below. Students who are absent can watch the video below to help them complete the assignment. They may need additional help during homeroom.
