Classroom Syllabus
Students in this class will embark upon five major Expeditions to discover the origin of the United States. Students will complete “time travel” quests to unravel and collect the messages in stories and artifacts, then connect their meaning to our present and future.
The use of time travel as a theme for the year is intended to be an engaging and thoughtful approach as our 7th graders encounter their first serious attempt to study history.
Students will also learn historical thinking skills and practices, geography skills, and current events as connected to the Iowa Core state standards.
Classwork and Homework will mainly be structured and organized through this website.
From this portal, students will access instructions and assignments, our classroom Edmodo site, our online textbook by TCI and other necessary resources. The website also includes our Vault of Memories blog for student work and experiences. The website is frequently updated, so please check back often.
Students will learn to improve their non-fiction reading, research and writing skills and by participating in educational games, simulations, presentations and projects. Finally, students will work with a variety of digital tools to complete work and to express their learning.
Learning Outcomes and Grading will be based on a combination of Iowa Core standards and history content using a traditional points system and scale. For instance, during our Maya quest, students will be expected to demonstrate that they have learned the historical thinking skill of perspective and the concept of chronology as applied to the Maya civilization.
All students will be expected to complete all work. Students receiving a “D” or “F” will receive additional opportunities and support to assure their learning. This may be accomplished with after school sessions, in-school tutorial sessions, and/or during homeroom time.
Expectations for Students
Ask questions. Work diligently. Be civil to others. Bring your material must-haves: writing utensil, laptop and cord. Arrive on time. Participate. Ask thoughtful questions. Take care of personal necessities during passing time, before class. Complete your work. Conduct your Caretaker job. Ask appropriate questions. Dispose of your own trash. Be prepared to revise your work. Ask for help. Help others. Be Kind.
