Engineering an Empire
Before we begin the video, we need to set up an area on our Maya Inspiration visual map for our notes regarding HOW the Maya lived.
1. Copy the social pyramid image you see below and paste onto your Maya Inspiration map. See screenshot for placement. Connect your Essential Question box to the image with an arrow and label it "HOW" as you see below. Be sure to type in the picture caption in the text box that is connected to the image.

2. Copy and paste the image of the Maya city-states map you see below onto your Maya Inspiration visual map. You will need to enlarge it a bit to see the map more clearly. See screenshot for placement. Type the title in the text box that is connected to the map. Connect the social pyramid image to the Maya city-states map with an arrow as you see in the screenshot.
3. Copy the "Engineering an Empire: The Maya" image you see below. Paste the image in the correct area on your map - look at the screenshot below to see where to place the image. Connect the Maya city-states map image to the Engineering an Empire image box with an arrow as you see in the screenshot. Type in the information in the image text box. You can NOT just use the screenshot with the text, otherwise your outline will not be correct.

Copy and paste the following two images below into your Inspiration map and place them according to the screenshot you see below the images. Copy and paste the text you see below each image into the text box for that image.

2. Rulers ordered large temples and plazas to be built as a sign of power and as another way to satisfy the gods.
3. This would attract more people to their city-state and help ensure their independence from potential rival city-states.
4. One major ruler of Tikal was Yik'in Chan K'awiil who ruled from about 734 – 766 C.E.
5. K'awiil defeated attacks from neighboring city-states.

2. Palenque was not the largest city-state but contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, and carvings that the Mayas produced.
3. Pakal was motivated to order the creation of grand buildings to help prove and show off his authority as a ruler.
4. His son, Kan Bahlam continued his father's construction legacy. Bahlam ordered the building of a group of three temples based on advanced mathematical calculations.
5. Bahlam also had underground aqueducts constructed to channel away excess water as well as constructed pipes that would allow for running water.

Today we will finish up Engineering and Empire video for those classes that are not done. The last of the video notes are listed on Tuesday, above.
We will complete/grade your Inspiration notes for the second part of your timeline and for the video.

- Use the Inspiration map and outline to answer some questions about the Maya. The questions are multiple choice and students are allowed to use ONLY their Inspiration map to answer the questions.

Prepare for team and independent research for how the Maya lived.
1. Add the Google Dictionary to the Chrome browser. Go to the Google Chrome Web store and search for "Google Dictionary" under the "Extensions" tab. Please see screenshot below. You will click on the blue FREE box to install the extensions.
Now whenever you are on a webpage you can simply left double click any word to get a pop-up box with a sound pronunciation speaker button and the definition.

2. Next, Miss B will have shared a Google doc with your team. This Google doc will first introduce you to the upcoming project. Miss B will add to it as we work. The Google doc will eventually have your artifact information on it. You will keep your research notes on the Google doc and it will outline everything your team needs to answer and complete your write-up for your section of the Codex for your class period.
